We Heart Whales
Hundreds of Pacific Rim Whale Festival participants laid down to declare their love for whales and call for whale protection in a human aerial image directed by artist John Quigley on MacKenzie Beach, a traditional whaling beach in Tofino, BC. Applying principles of biomimicry and mathematics, a hearty crew of volunteers began at daybreak to draft the large-scale image. Howling winds, driving rain, a rapidly rising tide, and the timely 'springing ahead' of our clocks made for some extra challenge.

Into Eden
Human civilization is confronted with significant challenges; the life-support systems of the planet are deteriorating, resources are becoming scarce and we are undergoing a dramatic shift in our economic system. The stress of this uncertainty and rapid change are plunging human consciousness into the fires of transformation. In a sad irony, many of the solutions to our problems are known to us; however, we don’t embrace them, nor do we act to implement them. Why is this?

Nuit Solidaire
Founded with 4 fundamental principles in mind; no one should live out on the streets, the state must provide access to and maintenance of a decent lodging facility, lodging has to remain the final purpose of all facilities at all times and social assistance must be offered to those who need it. During the 'Night of Solidarity' volunteers, citizens, artists and celebrities spend the night out on the street together with the homeless, sleeping in tents, sharing the problems others face every night.

The 11th Hour
Drought. Famine. Severe flooding. Hurricanes. Acid rain. The highest average temperatures in recorded history. Catastrophe is reported on the news as isolated incidents but they are pieces of a larger global puzzle. Humanity's time on earth has been short but powerful. The human drive to ensure its own survival and quality of life has revolutionized industry, science, nutrition and medicine. But it has also effected unprecedented changes in the delicate balance that makes life on earth possible.

Blue Gold
Worldwide we are polluting, diverting, pumping and wasting our limited supply of fresh water exponentially as population and technology grows. Overdevelopment of agriculture, housing and industry increase the demands well beyond the finite supply, re- sulting in the desertification of the earth. Corporate giants force developing countries to privatize their water for profit. Corrupt governments use water for personal gain. Military control of wa- ter emerges and they are setting the stage for world water wars.

Nouvel Art De Militer
The new faces of contestation in the 20th century; Jeudi Noir, Déboulonneurs, Brigade activiste des clowns, Dés- obéissants, Anonymous... beyond traditional forms of strikes and manifestations, a new generation of militants appeared in the mediate space to agitate the debate. With them, no leader, no violence, no long theoretical discourse, just a strong taste for humor and spectacular mise-en-scenes. Photographer Cyril Cavalie and author Sebastien Porte tell their story.
